This February I planted 20+ bareroots and a few rose trees. I have been giving them fish fertilizer every month and they are all happy.
The past couple of weeks have been hot - and it’s going to be anywhere from 92-104 for the next 10 days.
Should I give them fish fertilizer or will it stress them out? Nighttime lows are in the high 50s - low 60s but it’s in the mid-to-high 80s by 10:00.
I am in zone 9b- Paso Robles, CA.
Thoughts?
Hi Jenn, I’d just keep them well watered. At those temps, the plants aren’t focused on growing or even really flowering, but remaining alive. Water is what they need, a steady supply of it. While fish emulsion isn’t as “salty” as many other kinds of fertilizer, the nitrogen in it can help push the plants to want to produce more growth when they’re best served just maintaining in the heat. Once the temps drop back into the less stressful range, feed them all the fish emulsion you wish, but for these extremes, I’d just keep watering. Good luck! I don’t envy those temps!
