Anne Belovich’s Old Garden Roses

Whether you have room to grow them on not, it is good to know about this interesting category of Heritage Roses. That has been my goal this year.

The cemetery where my father’s side of the family are buried in Alabama had a large amount of red rose bushes that bloomed at just the right time-Decoration Day and Mothers Day! They have this massive bloom at that time, and I found out (my great grandmother had one in her front yard) that deadheading after the bloom encouraged smaller blooms. The smell was like a damask rose. Sadly, and boy did they get an earful when they did it, the cemetery removed them all! What a shame.

I have unfortunately heard this story of removing roses from other cemeteries.
