Do I cut the black cane tips? If so, how far down?
Yes, cut down to healthy white pith. I’m curious why they blackened. Were those dog legs with no growth buds at their tops or is the blackening due to pest or disease? If it was simply because there were no buds at their tops, it’s a simple matter to prevent them again by making sure you cut just above growth buds so the sap can push new growth from where you pruned. If not, perhaps clear photos of the removed blackened cane pieces may help diagnose why they blackened.
