Exhibition Form - BB

I planted a Black Baccara this year and would love to exhibit it (such a dramatic rose!). The foliage is going good, and I’ve got it coming out with some good singles and sprays. However, the petals are so velvety, even well formed buds don’t really have that satisfying ‘cone’ shape as they open in the center. Any suggestions on how to get this to open up a little better?

I imagine I just have to get the blooms to be slightly bigger than average. These pictured are only maybe 3"-3 1/2" wide.

I used to grow this rose and believe the petals have a lot of substance to them. Play with them with your fingers to gently move the petals, or use q tips, knitting needles etc to get them to open more. Practice with them and you’ll be ready for the show!

Where do you live? I’m in Southern Calif near Palm Springs. My roses bloom now but buds and blooms are much smaller in the heat we’ve even having.

My garden is in the PNW, which is normally quite cool in comparison. However, we have had a lot of heat in the past few weeks that did likely affect!
