Fall Rose Planting

In the past, I have planted bare root roses end of October in my Wisconsin 5b garden with great success. I am receiving an own root rose from Heirloom this week (10/9). Can’t decide if I plant in the ground or pot it and keep in my 40 degree garage for the winter. Thoughts??

Wouldn’t that pretty much depend upon the maturity of the received plant? If it’s a hefty, mature thing with thick growth, better able to withstand hard freezes and long periods of cold without damage, planting outdoors may be safer, but if it’s a smaller, thinner, less mature propagation, potting it in your garage over winter is probably going to be the safer alternative.

The canes are about pencil width with no leaves on it. Very green! Typical for a plant from Heirloom. It is own root. Last year I also received a gift and I did plant and overwinter in the garage. That one is now still blooming. It was Sunshine Daydream. A lovely Grandiflora of soft medium yellow with a sweet fragrance!
