For large container growers…do you have any good suggestions for companion plants? I’m looking for suggestions for perennial fillers and spillers for 7B and spacing tips. I have 24x24x24 and 20x20x20 square planters. I planted this year and don’t want my roses to struggle so if it’s not recommended- it’s all good.
Those pots are adequate but any perennials would compete with your roses. However, if you are longing for color something like Lobularia or Alyssum is cascading and attracts beneficial. I wouldn’t use perennials, however, maybe someone in this forum has done so successfully and can explain how often they need to pull all the plants out of the pots to refresh the soil.
Agreed. Rosejoy is correct that perennials or weeping shrubs such as creeping rosemary, will compete and inhibit the performance of your roses. The Lobularia or Alyssum are good suggestions. Granted, 7b may well have different soil lives than we experience here in 9b, but potted roses here require repotting every 12 - 18 months due to the soil deteriorating and rinsing through the drain holes. The largest I use here are 15 gallon nursery cans because my “mileage” is getting rather high and I have to be able to physically pick them up to repot them. Good luck!
My zone is 7B and I do not plant anything in my rose barrels, except the rose to get color and have a pretty garden I plant things around the roses in smaller containers I’ve planted pin cushion butterfly, and cat mint, alyssum which all will bring the beneficials to the gardening
I like in Central Louisiana. I grow miniature roses in very large containers that appreciate the shade provided by the foliage of trailing vinca (periwinkle) while the continious blooms add an eye catching display of color.
I do like Cora cascade vinca, that is a great suggestion.
Thank you so much ! How mature would you say the rose bush should be before I plant this annual ? Also would it be possible to just place an additional small rectangular box planter inside the top part of the rose bush instead of planting it in the same soil ? I’m new to this so that might not even work!
I would not put any container on top of the original one. Your soil needs access to air. Probably the second year the rose has been planted, the rose bush would be established well in the container. Then add some cascading annuals.
