Galls on rose roots

what is the best Coase to use for galls the root of roses. Last week I fined out that I had a brush that the gall had taken over the root system, I have dug it up put in the trash, can I put another bush in that hole or do I wait a while or do I need to remove the dirt and replace it with fresh dirt before putting a new bush in it.

You will need to remove a lot of the soil. Common recommendation is 2 wheelbarrows full. Be sure to disinfest your shovels with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Did you take a picture of the roots? Is there any chance that you might have had a bad infestation of root nematodes? They create large nodules within the roots. What kind of soil do you have sandy or clay based?

This is the root of the bush with the galls

this bush was one I have had for a very long time and had started to look diseased, not growing well and not making flowers like it use to and ever time it made a new can from the bud union it would look disease by the end of the summer.

The graft just looks very old, it doesn’t look like crown gall. Can you bring it to your local state extension office to have it diagnosed ? You would save yourself a lot of labor and cost in replacing the soil.
