Greenhouse propagators

I have a cool hobby greenhouse where I have been rooting mini and polyantha cuttings the past couple of years. It is 60* in there today (Feb 25) and I noticed a few aphids on the top new growth. In previous years I have not seen aphids in there until April and my action plan is to water spray everything and move it outdoors. This year it is about 4-6 weeks until I can safely put them outside. I did a spray tank of water washing today and will do that again tomorrow.

What do other greenhouse growers do? The rooted cuttings here are looking good.

Is the early morning or early evening the best time to take a cutting for propagation? Like we do when we cut roses to take to a rose show, or for cuttings does it really matter?

I’ve done both with similar results. I prefer late mornings hours after I’ve watered.

Thanks Jim - good to hear from you. Late morning is what I have been doing. Always enjoyed having your participation in the Tacoma Rose Society meeting via Zoom.

Take care,
John Moe

Do polyanthas still have to abide by the “pencil-thickness” guideline?

I have one that has thin, wiry stems that I’ll prune. Maybe 2-3mm thick but I do not want to waste my time if it’ll just rot

I just use the thickest hard wood from the current years growth. I use a 10” came however.
