Welcome to the forum Jana, Depending on the soil type you have, clay versus sandy may impact how deep and wide to dig your holes. It is always preferable, if possible, to prepare a larger bed. However, if that isn’t possible then when digging in clay soil, wider is always better. So on average 15 to 18 inches deep will work. Be mindful of the spacing too.

Jana - I live in the Detroit area which is technically Zone 6a or b. However, we can get some very cold spells during the winter and I’m guessing that you can too. I always plant my new roses with the bud union 2 inches below the finished soil level. This will help with winter hardiness.

Rosejoy’s advice is great….My lesson learned this year was soil at the base….I didn’t want to do the “volcano” mulching….but I left too much uncovered….once I went back and added more good soil and mulch….things started happening….Good luck….
