Is this Canker?

Hi,
I inherited some roses through buying my house and am seeking some guidance. I am located in Albuquerque New Mexico (zone 7). The rose is not a floribunda or climbing rose but I don’t know it’s species. It appeared to be ailing last summer and I thought it was heat stress. The leaves went brown and crackly at the tops eventually looking burned and I learned this is actually likely salt burn. This year I noticed brown spots across 85 or 90% of the stems and canes. Is this canker? If so do I cut every single brown cane even if it has a few in affected stems above it? Thanks for the help

Welcome Sophia. The irregular spots could be how this rose grows. It does not look like canker. However, please cut out all the dead canes and clean out a cane or two in the center. Since you are in a hot dry climate, watering your rose will be the most important thing you can do. Then contact your local state extension office and find out about doing a soil test around this rose. Also find someone in a local rose society, they can give you the best advice. Your soil is mostly likely alkaline, meaning the pH is above 7. Once you have the soil test results you will know what you can do to help this rose thrive.
