I was going to do a mild pruning in August. After helping with the pruning at the ARS I planned to do the same with mine. However, things happened and I didn’t get it done. My question is will it hurt to give them a light pruning now or should I wait until winter? One other thing I might mention is they are not hybrids, but own root roses.

Welcome here Drae. When is your first hard freeze? Must you prune them? You can lightly prune them and take blooms for vases.
I live in zone 8, Shreveport, La. So our first hard freeze is around the end of December. It was beautiful out so I did go ahead and give them a light pruning. Thank you so much for your answer.
I would wait until December/January to prune so that plant growth starts to slow down in preparation for December and January. I know your winters are a lot milder than mine in Wisconsin, but I have seen damage to roses growing at the Rose Center in Shreveport when they get hit with unusually cold, icy weather. Those leaves are also helping the plant to prepare for winter.
