Mulch harboring pests?

Gardening in PNW, near Seattle
Do you mulch your rose beds to retain moisture? If you have used bagged mulch in the past, I am curious to know if you have ever experienced an increase in insects and/or disease as a result. This year I bought about 30 bags of Lowes, cheap bagged brown mulch (contents looks like construction debris) and applied it in May. Recently someone told me they stopped keeping it on over winter due to an increase in overwintering insects. What’s your experience?

I use hardwood mulch and have never had a problem. I have never used the cheap stuff from the big box stores but understand most of that mulch is pallets that are shredded. Not much good in a garden setting. With wood plentiful in the PNW why don’t you try to sign up for the free stuff from tree cutters, the chip drop website. Those chips super charge the soil as it breaks down as well as help with weed suppression.
