I went out to see how my roses came through the winter and I noticed these black canes! What is going on here and what should I do?
What you see there is normal freeze damage in cold weather climates. In fact there is so little dieback and so much healthy green that I would say that your rose came through the winter quite well. The solution is simple, when you prune your roses, make sure to cut into the green part of the came above a bud eye, but well below the black areas. If the center of the newly cut cane is not white, cut lower.
