Florists keep their roses (and just about everything else) in the refrigerator. My cut roses seem to keep a little while in my refrigerator as well.
If refrigerated overnight, they also seem to last a while longer once taken out and put in the vase.
Is that my imagination?

I meant they seem to last a little longer than the roses that have been cut and immediately put in the vase.
Yes, roses will last longer when refrigerated. The coolers slow down the aging of the rose. Especially important for us that there be no ethylene gas given off by any vegetables in your refrigerator.
Yes, they last longer while in the fridge; but once removed from the fridge and placed in a vase, do they last longer than roses which have been cut from the bush an placed immediately in the vase?
Does a brief period of refrigeration do something good to the rose?
I have not done a study on this, however, I would think it might help for a day or two, but not longer. Once the rose is in typical home temperatures it will start to age.
Using something in the water like Chrysal cut flower preservative, that will help keep the roses in good shape longer.

Coolers (refrigerators) that florists use are not self-defrosting like home refrigerators are. Roses kept in home refrigerators for very long tend to dry out. I don’t show roses anymore, but when I did I put sandwich bags over the roses to keep the dry air off the blooms. They would keep for most of a week and look fresh for the show. They still looked good at the end of the day; not sure how much longer they would last. One important thing is when you get the cut roses in the house, recut the stem a little bit and immediately put it in fresh water. Chrystal is a good product to use to help the blooms keep longer.
