Rose rosette disease?

Hello,

Recently I bought a Rose de Rescht plant with and it grew normally in the first month or so, but in the last week or so it has been sending out these very thorny and red shoots with thin leaves. Normally new leaves from Rose de Rescht tend to be rust colored with a shade of green and oval shaped, but portions of the plant are growing very red shoots. I was wondering if this could be RRD.

Here’s what the concerning shoots look like:

For reference, this is what I consider to be normal new growth, greener and a lot less thorny:

It could be, however, cut the entire cane to the base/ ground level. Spray with Bifenthrin. If some new growth from the base of your grows out distorted then you will know.

Do you have a local extension service plant disease clinic that you could get it diagnosed?

per Dr. Mark Windham- research has shown that cutting off affected stems only works about 20-30% of the time to control RRD. Most (70-80%) of the time the roses continues to suffer from RRD. If your plant is diagnosed with RRD, dig it up and throw away in regular trash ASAP!
