Hi, what is the preferred method of removing leaves from stems during your first pruning of the year? I was taught to pull them down and off, then dispose of them. But someone said they should be individually cut off. Opinions? Thank you!

Depends, if they are easy to pull off, then do so. But if you feel any resistance then cut the leaves off.

I agree….if you touch them and they fall off…that works….be sure and pick them up if they have black spot or anything else….otherwise…snip them off…I’m sure they’ll be beautiful….

Both methods are used, but cutting the leaves off is generally gentler on the plant. Pulling leaves downward can sometimes strip bark or damage dormant buds, especially on younger or thinner canes.
That said, many experienced rose growers still pull leaves off quickly during spring pruning without issues, particularly on mature healthy roses. The important part is removing and disposing of the foliage to reduce overwintering pests and fungal diseases like black spot.
Personally, I prefer using pruners for stubborn leaves and only pulling when they come away easily.
