My rose whimsy is potted and her roots are coming out of the bottom of the pot and onto the surface of the soil. I’m wondering how to handle this. The roots are thicker than your your finger. I didn’t know this until I moved the pot and saw the thick roots. She didn’t do very well this year and I’m wondering if she just needs to be repotted? Should I cut those roots off? Or how should I handle this? Thank you

I feel your pain. And yes your rose needs to be repotted into a larger pot. You have two options depending on the kind of pot your rose is in. If it is in a standard black nursery container you can cut it open and keep many of the larger anchor roots. However, if your pot is more decorative and you don’t want to destroy it, then cut off the roots sticking out of the pot and pull out the rose and replant. Wet the rose before removing and move it to its larger home with fresh potting soil. Then you can use some type of root stimulator like Nature’s Alternative Protelizer, and or SennSensational Seaumic, Superthrive, etc.
Repot into a larger pot. do not cut the roots.
Buy another new rose plant for the old pot.
Sometimes the roots are so thick coming out of the pot you are unable to get the rose out of the pot. Ideally, it would be best not to cut the roots, except the girdling roots.
