Thrips & second blooms

Any suggestions on getting rid of thrips? Tulsa Rose Society suggested sprays with Spinosad, but I couldn’t find the commercial name….Also, any suggestions for bigger second blooms on my repeat blooming roses? The first round is great…second….not so much…Do I feed them again? Thanks in advance for any advice….

Are you referring to Chilli Thrips or Flower Thrips?

You can buy a number of Spinosad products on line by simply searching Spinosad. Some are organic, others not, if that means anything to you. Both are the same product, just one is manufactured through an organic process while the others are not.

As for flower size, generally, the second flush occurs during periods of higher heat than the first and many roses produce smaller flowers during hotter periods. Increasing the water available and supplying additional fertilizer after the first flush may help, or not, depending upon your weather conditions and the specific roses involved. Some refuse to flower in high heat while others flower but produce smaller blooms.

Thanks for getting back with me…not sure of the type but I think they’re hurting the second round of blooms based on a rose society photo…Thanks once again for your help and the two additional links…yes…it’s extremely hot here so I need to muster up my patience…

Yes, the heat will make rose blooms recycle quicker so the blooms will be much smaller. In the fall with the cooler weather your blooms will become larger, however, the spring flush typically encourages the biggest blooms.

Once again…I thank you for your advice…This helps me get through our first real blast of heat for the season…but it’s certainly not the last…Thank you again…

@Brenda_Rhea if you’re observing the “burned” distortion of foliage and new growth, it’s Chilli Thrips. Take a look at the photos of the growth and flowers at this link. Rose Bush Thrip Damage? scroll down to the lower images where the growth looks scorched. Flower thrips won’t produce THAT kind of damage.

Hi Brenda, I know you have received great advice. Would like to add that the value of the diligent care, watering and feeding for second flush is to get to the great fall blooms. There is nothing like fall blooms (3rd flush). Temps are cooler. You want to feed your roses spring/ summer/ fall. Organics are best. - Pam
