I bought my first rose several years ago. Westmoreland climbing rose. I just planted it and let it grow every which way. I have now done a little research and discovered I should have trained it. It is now big and wide with thick canes. Is there a way to cut it back and train it up the fence?
If it’s own root, it may be a bit easier as everything that grows will be that rose. If it’s budded, you may have root stock triggered by a severe prune. You might try posting photos of the rose and what you want to train it against. It’s entirely possible you might be able to use some of the growth on the fence without having to cut it all back. If you can train the canes off the vertical, it will throw laterals which will increase your coverage and bloom production. I’d post several photos showing it in comparison to the fence and let people make suggestions based upon better information. Fingers crossed!
