I have not had a great solution for my climbers as far as trellises go. Can someone share what they are using to trellis their climbing roses? I have bought the 24" wide metal trellises at Home Depot and Lowes, and I have bought wooden ones of about the same width, but they just are not what I need. I don’t want to spend a fortune on this but want something sturdy and able to help me achieve maximum blooms. Any suggestions here would be great.
24" wide is NOT large enough for any climber. Are you trying to grow them against a house wall or a fence or something? To get maximum bloom, you’re going to need to train them out nearly horizontally for many feet. Something like this.
Or, like this.
Your results will be substantially better if you can use a wall or fence to train the climber against so you can have the space the plant demands to produce the foliage mass required to support the mass of flowers you want.
I have found that metal is not friendly to roses. Wood or stone works much better, some people may have experienced different results. Roseseek is right, 24 inches is not nearly wide enough. I have a wooden rail fence that my climbers are trained on, they seem to like it.
There are many materials that can be used to build and support roses especially the larger climbers . Really depends on the rose and size that it will grow to . Let’s start with rebar 1/2 inch for bigger plants try 5/8 inch , Copper tubing , plastic pipe , T-bar and deer fencing . Have built various walls with all of these and pillars also . The real thing is to give support and guidance for the climber . The best support is the one that disappears . That is one reason that wood is not used plus the plant will outlast the wood framing .. Had a whole talk and slides on structures a long time ago and have played with more structures since then . What ever you can imagine you want it to look like it can be done . Otto
