I’m new to ARS and am excited to hear from other members on any roses that do well in zone 5, Midwest, clay soil. I’m hoping to order some roses this year from Palatine nursery in Canada. Will you be ordering from them and if so, what varieties?
Just so you know, this will be Palatine’s last year selling roses. They will sell out very quickly, so do keep an eye on when they open for sales.
I have 21 hybrid teas in the garden purchased from Palatine - most of them planted in the Spring of 2021. Palatine is top quality for their customer service, selection and packing/shipping, and the multiflora rootstock they use does perform well in the Midwest heavy clay. You should try to lighten the clay soil some using organic matter (such as bagged compost) as well as coarse perlite - those have worked well for me in my Zone 5B Chicagoland garden.
I have found that Palatine will send you beautiful bare root roses which are packed with care and precision. Keep in mind that they grow their roses on-site at Niagara on the Lake, Ontario, Canada - so expect them to be a little smaller than bare root roses grown on Dr. Huey out in California (like those from Edmunds’ and Jackson & Perkins). I have found that they do much better in their 2nd growing season than in the first.
Here are several that have done well for me and that I would recommend:
- Pope John Paul II
- Rainbow Niagara
- Grande Amore
- Buxom Beauty
- Savoy Hotel
- Elina
- Liebeszauber
- Acapella
- Lasting Love
I did not check which of these will be available this year. Good luck.
I have a whole list of probably 20+, some leftover from last year that sold out too quickly.
I really hope I can snag some of my most wanted.
From last years list: Acropolis, Amorosa, Athena Eleganza, Chloris, Gruard Larose, Rosenfaszination, Flora Colonia, Meine Rose, Rosanna.
Added for this year: Amour de Molene, Bentheimer, Better Times Eleganza, Caramel Kiss, Coconut Ice, Double Amber, Dylan Rose, Floral Fairy Tale, Lichtkonigin Lucia, Pearl of Niagra, Perfumed Kiss, Pink Enchantment Eleganza, Pretty Dancer, Roberto Alagna, Schon Ingeborg, Sunmaid, Sweet Baby, The Pride, Wellenspiel.
Is that enough?
It is really unfortunate that we are losing such a great, quality provider of roses. Where can you purchase the diverse group of roses available from Palatine when Palatine is no longer an option?
Welcome to the group. They certainly are a quality grower, however, sadly, they’ve decided to move away from the Rose business concentrating on segments.
