A month or so back I purchased what I thought was a Peace Rose. After wondering if it would live it has grown and produced it first flower. What is concerning me is that it has come out red. Is this normal for the first flowers? While on the subject of the Peace Rose there is a book very well worth reading on the creation of the Peace Rose. It is called For the Love of a Rose by Antonia Ridge. I was able to purchase a copy off eBay. It is a true story and certainly worth the read.
No, it is not common for the first flower on Peace to be red. It appears to me you may have a mis identified plant. While there are red colored Peace sports (mutations) this doesn’t appear to be one. Unfortunately, there are several other roses with the word “Peace” in their names and this may simply be one of those. You should contact the source from whom you obtained this to see if they can help you determine what it is, unless it was a big box store or other end retailer, then you’re probably out of luck.
Sorry to say Conrad but the Peace rose is never red, but yellow. Perhaps you are seeing the rootstock?
Thank you for your response! I bought the rose from Walmart. Some might say rather buy from a professional, but I paid $13 compared to what the professional growers charge. As a South African living in this country every dollar counts. Apart from that I purchased a Queen Elizabeth rose from Walmart a few months back and it is growing fabulously! I will keep this one growing for what it is and buy another in the Spring after the Kentucky winter.
Thank you Rosejoy from responding to my request! This is something which I wondered about. My plan is to keep it going and invest in a Peace Rose in the Spring after the Kentucky Winter.
