Winter care for my species roses

I tend to plant what I like - sometimes a challenge in my 5b climate. I have a couple of species roses that in the last few years have not bloomed. I have had to prune down in spring due to winter damage. I generally don’t winter protect my roses and have had very good success with that. What might I do to protect my species roses so that they bloom on the old wood next year. I am thinking of wrapping in burlap. They are healthy and grow well during the summer.
