Ammonia nitrate

I was told that 1/2 cup of ammonia nitrate around each bush will help get break in the early spring, is this true or false and anyone tried this

I have not tried this. I do put 1/2 cup of blood meal nitrogen around each bush in the spring. My soil test indicated a severe lack of nitrogen at the start of the season because nitrogen washes through the soil rather than binds to the soil like P-K

I have used what is known as blue chip, 40-0-0 which is a slow release nitrogen. It is a good boost, especially for roses damaged from winter. Blood meal, as Elena has mentioned, works very well as a quicker source of nitrogen. These sources of nitrogen are especially helpful if your soil test advises that you have high phosphorus that is bound up in your soil.

Be very careful with ammonia nitrate! Its super hot and can burn roots. Blood meal is a much better choice. What people don’t understand is that ammonia nitrate comes from dehydration pig urine.
