New break from bud union

Continuing the discussion from Ammonia nitrate:

I was told by something who grow roses that they use one half cup of ammonia nitrate around each bush to get more breaks from the bud union, has anyone tried this and does it work.

Have not used ammonia nitrate but I doubt it would give more basal breaks. The same thing was said for years about using Epsom Salts for the same purpose and was proved to be false.

thank for the information

Hopefully, Satish Prabhu will see this. However, do you know your pH and how much organic matter is in the soil around your roses? Ammonium nitrate is a good source of nitrogen and is the primary nutrient roses need. Satish advises applying several shovel fulls of leaf compost around each rose in spring and fall. Getting your soil tested will also be important to determine what your soil needs. Let us know. Providing optimum growth conditions will promote basal breaks. Also, how old are your roses? Are they grafted? Is the bud union crusty?

My late father and I used to use Nitrate of Ammonia around the new stems of potatoes when about four inches high through the soil. It provided a boost of nitrogen to the new plant, which improved the foliar colour and of course provided that little extra bit of nitrogen.

Regarding aiding the production of extra shoots etc, in time the hulms did look richer in colour. Increase in quantity of new tubers, questionable.

Possibly using Nitrate of Ammonia on roses or any other plant may to the user appear to have certain benefits. Great. Please continue to share your trials and experiments. If I may. Whatever chemicals you might use. Please read the instructions. DON’T make the mistake and think you are being kind and generous by adding that little bit extra.

Happy gardening.
